In the latest Family Office Sherpa Podcast, I delve into the uncertainty of investment management within the private office. Whether your reviewing you investment office or looking to establish a new one, the need for clarity on purpose and roles within internal and external portfolio managers is paramount.
I break it up between the internal and external team:
Internal Team:
The difference between the governance (IC) and investment management function.
Are you giving the internal investment team the ability to make decisions or are they there for reactive points of view?
Are they given due process on how to make decisions?
Are they aware of the veto power of stakeholders
Are they aware of their parameters/restrictions?
External (Wealth Managers, Advisers, Consultants etc)
Do they understand their mandate?
Have they been given the IPS/Purpose document?
What does the meeting cadence need to be?
Are they able to see just their slice or the whole portfolio?
This is family office so we don't want to be too bureaucratic or kill the fun with process but confusion causes conflict and misalignment. Hopefully this episode provides some guidance.
I work with offices on establishing both internal and external investment teams. Giving people (and firms) clarity on their role and expectations can improve returns, staff retention and relationships with good counterparties.
